
Why “Explosion-Proof” Quartz Actually Matters in Your Bathroom
If you’ve ever used a bathroom infrared heater, you know that feeling of instant warmth the second you flip the switch. It’s great. To get that effect, we use quartz glass because it can handle crazy amounts of heat without flinching. But here’s the problem: showers are wet. Imagine a quartz tube glowing at over 800°C. The “Cold Drop” problem
When a freezing drop hits a scorching hot surface, the glass shrinks way too fast in that one tiny spot. It’s a violent reaction. Standard quartz just can’t take that kind of stress and ends up cracking. That’s where “explosion-proof” quartz comes in. Now, don’t let the name scare you—it doesn’t mean the heater is a bomb. It just means we’ve added a protective layer or used a specific tempering process. It keeps the tube from shattering into a million pieces when it gets splashed. It’s basically a safety blanket for your glass.
How the Heat Actually Works
Inside that tube, there’s a tungsten filament. When the power hits, it doesn’t bother warming up the air in the room—that takes forever. Instead, it sends infrared rays straight to your skin. It’s direct. It’s fast. One quick tip if you’re building or installing these: watch your housing. If you cram a high-wattage tube into a tiny space, that reflector behind it is going to take a beating. Make sure it’s rated for the heat, or you’ll end up with a warped piece of metal and a very unhappy customer.
The Trade-off
Nothing is perfect. Because these tubes have that extra protective coating, you might lose a tiny bit of that raw heat intensity. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s there. To us, that’s a fair trade. I’d much rather have a heater that’s 2% less intense than one that shatters in a humid bathroom. Just remember to double-check your gaskets. The glass might be tough, but electricity and water still hate each other. If water leaks into the terminals, you’re going to trip your breaker, and that’s a headache nobody wants.
